7 Folklore lyrics that take your heart to comfort and gently crumble it into pieces.

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

Since Taylor Swift released her 8th studio album, Folklore, Swifties had their world go upside down. A Taylor release is always a major affair in the pop town. She hints! She always does but unlike that Folklore came as a surprise. Sepia-toned, sweater-weather surprise!

Folklore, as the name suggests is one poetic universe. Swift sets a prime tone of sadness in each track varying through the themes of other emotions. The aesthetic melancholy that persists throughout is undeniable. Taylor, no doubt is a skilled songwriter and with Folklore, she elevated her writing to a different level. With some personal and fictional undertones exploring characters and their love, loss, affairs, friendships, troubles and trivia. Each having a point of view of the story presented with such relatability yet feeling surreal.

Folklore is the prime of Swift’s art as, a lyrical storyteller. And here are 7 comforting and sad lyrics from the masterpiece :

1.

“You know I didn’t want to have to haunt you But what a Ghostly scene You wear the same jewels that I gave you As you burry me”

-My tears ricochet

For every foe that was once a friend. The ones who betrayed your trust took your kindness for granted. These lyrics can haunt them forever.

2.

"You’re not my homeland anymore So what am I defending now? You were my town Now I am in exile seein' you out."

- Exile (ft. Bon Iver)

To difficult breakups. Painful goodbyes. And the realization of loss. If exile isn’t the vibe to all these emotions then what is? Btw, Who is Cutting Onions? *Sobs uncontrollably*

3.

"And though I can't recall your face I still got love for you."

- Seven

Probably the saddest song from the album, Seven resonates with innocence. Your childhood friend with troubles at home but youthening strength can escape the unpleasant situation and it will be solved quickly.

4.

"To live for the hope of it all

Cancel plans just in case you’d call

And say, “Meet me behind the mall”

So much for summer love and saying “us”

Cause you weren’t mine to lose

You weren’t mine to lose"

- August

That one summer love that wasn’t meant to be. The longing and loving only to ultimately lose it all like the lost summer days of August. Sad girl poetry Max!

5.

"And I am still a believer, but I don’t know why I have never been a natural, all I do is try, try, try I am still on the trapeze I also sell trying everything to keep you looking at me."

-Mirrorball

The times you have tried to fit in, desperately sought attention mirroring personalities that aren’t yours just to get shattered.

6.

"Don’t call me kid, don’t call me baby Look at this godforsaken mess that you made me You showed me colors you know I can’t see with anyone else."

-Illicit Affairs

One messy hush affair that makes you go miserable by every meeting but you can’t speak of it. The pain of secrecy makes you feel like a fool. *Hot mess*

7.

"They told me all of my cages were mental And I got wasted like all my potential And my words shoot to kill when I'm mad I have a lot of regrets about that"

-This is me trying

Acceptance of your faults in a relationship and trying to mend them while alcohol, fear, and loneliness barricade the healing. Agony and Regrets written all over it.

Brb, going to grab a cozy blanket, some wine, and tissues!
